A massive ICE raid resulted in nearly 50 immigrants arrested at a South Carolina company. In a joint operation between state and federal authorities, they executed the raid at Burnstein Von Seelen Precision Casting. The operation was carried out in Abbeville, in the western part of the southern state.
Agents detained 48 workers and two managers from the site on charges of identity fraud. The charges involve obtaining employment with forged documents at the manufacturing company. According to the South Carolina Attorney General’s office, the operation took several years of investigation.
The so-called “Operation Ghost Story” is the result of exhaustive investigation. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was in charge of custody of the 48 employees. The managers themselves allowed the use of false identities within the manufacturing company.
What Did Authorities Say About the South Carolina Raid?
The charges from the State Grand Jury point directly to two company managers. The identified managers are Christopher Douglas Ramey and Sandy Lynn Willis as the primary responsible parties. According to authorities, both executives deliberately ignored their legal obligation to verify documents.
They facilitated the use of forged documentation within the precision manufacturing company. Those implicated face charges for resorting to document vendors to obtain false permits. They obtained forged state driver’s licenses and counterfeit Social Security cards.
Among the names of those charged revealed by authorities is José Luis Aguilar Mejía. The defendant is currently at large and authorities are actively searching for him. Also listed are Lázaro Hernández Hernández, Xavier Martínez Adorno and Zenon Rojas-Cabrera.
Bail hearings for managers Ramey and Willis were scheduled for this Thursday. Judge Heath P. Taylor will conduct them at the Richland County Courthouse. The managers face serious criminal charges for employment identity fraud.
What Warning Did South Carolina’s Attorney General Issue?
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson issued a forceful warning following the arrests. He asserted that these crimes not only take jobs away from hardworking American citizens. They also jeopardize the national security of the entire country.
“If you provide illegal assistance to undocumented immigrants in South Carolina, you will be investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” Wilson declared at a press conference. He warned that they will pursue those who take advantage of Americans who work hard day after day.
