Trump Toughens Plan Against Sanctuary Cities

Following judicial setbacks, President Trump is escalating his legal campaign against sanctuary cities and states that resist his immigration enforcement agenda through federal lawsuits that raise unprecedented constitutional questions about state and federal power over immigration matters.

Following a wave of judicial defeats, President Donald Trump is striking back at states that refuse to support his immigration agenda. The president seeks to impose his policy through a series of new federal lawsuits. These actions raise unprecedented legal questions about the scope of state and federal government authority in immigration matters.

Last week, the Department of Justice filed four lawsuits against states that have refused to authorize the use of unmarked license plates for federal vehicles. Federal judges have ruled predominantly against Trump’s campaign. The president seeks to force states and cities to cooperate with mass deportations.

More recently, a federal judge dismissed a challenge filed by Trump against a Boston municipal ordinance. The measure prohibits local law enforcement from providing certain information about immigrants to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This decision was the fourth court ruling dismissing a lawsuit against sanctuary cities governed by Democrats.

Why Does Trump Insist on Suing Sanctuary Cities?

The Trump administration is encountering the same legal obstacles it faced during its first term. Nevertheless, it persists in its efforts to pressure local authorities, even resorting to appeals courts. The strategy appears to have more of a political than strictly legal foundation.

Harry Sandick, a lawyer who participated in legal battles against Trump, explained the motivation. “I think the administration perceives this as an issue where they can emerge victorious,” Sandick stated. “It is an administration willing to suffer defeats if it believes that persisting will bring it some political benefit.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche blamed federal district judges in a recent interview. The challenge, Blanche noted, is that lawsuits are being filed in cities where judges are very adversarial to the issue. Blanche expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would eventually rule in Trump’s favor.

While the administration seeks political victories, it also faces solid legal resistance. Trump’s attempts to pressure sanctuary jurisdictions by withholding federal funds have been repeatedly dismissed. Nevertheless, his administration has tenaciously persisted in using this intimidation tactic.

What Legal Obstacles Does the Trump Administration Face?

New and more novel legal questions are emerging from the strategies of Democratic officials. They seek to erect new types of obstacles against the president’s Republican immigration crackdown campaign. Disputes surrounding the prohibition on federal agents wearing masks are a clear example.
