The migratory tragedy in the United States adds a new and very painful chapter. The number of deceased migrants rose to 7 in recent hours. Police authorities are investigating the gruesome discovery of various human remains. These bodies were abandoned on massive commercial freight trains.

Last weekend, a railway inspector made the initial discovery. He found 5 men and 1 woman without vital signs. This incident occurred at a large Union Pacific company depot. The railway complex is located in Laredo, very close to Mexico.

Subsequently, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office reported another deceased body. The discovery occurred very close to the railway tracks in San Antonio, Texas. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), this corridor is high-risk for travelers. Agents suspect this man belongs to the same migrant group.

How were the victims discovered in Texas?

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar provided recent official details. He stated that the body was located shortly after midday. The advanced state of decomposition prevented determining the exact age of the deceased. Therefore, forensic work will take several additional days.

Authorities found a Mexican identification among the subject’s clothing. However, official confirmation of his true legal nationality is still pending. The sheriff indicated that the man may have accidentally fallen from the train car. Another line of investigation suggests he was thrown after losing his life.

The Mexican consulate in Laredo confirmed very unfortunate news today. At least 3 of the 7 fatalities are Mexican citizens. The institution maintains close contact with the affected families. According to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, consular assistance is a complete priority.

What caused this migratory tragedy?

Corinne Stern, the local county medical examiner, meticulously examined the human remains. Her medical team discovered various belongings alongside the fatalities. Among the items were small cell phones and several personal identifications. These documents suggest that the individuals came from Mexico and Honduras.

Preliminary medical analyses indicate that these were entirely accidental deaths. The medical examiner detailed the tragic case of the 29-year-old woman. Her body showed undeniable symptoms of sunstroke and severe hyperthermia. As reported by The Associated Press, extreme temperatures are lethal in this desert region.

The climate in the immense Texas desert is extremely hostile. It is very hot during the day and extremely cold at night. Stern believes the other individuals also perished from severe heatstroke. However, complete medical autopsies are still underway.

What role do train routes and coyotes play?

Many undocumented migrants use long freight trains to evade authorities. This clandestine practice is extremely dangerous, unstable, and completely unpredictable. Ruthless human trafficking networks, known as coyotes, control these routes. They charge thousands of dollars for promising a supposedly safe passage.

Unfortunately, these criminal promises almost always turn out to be deadly lies. Traffickers lock vulnerable people in hermetically sealed metal train cars. The extreme sun turns these industrial containers into suffocating ovens. The lack of water accelerates acute dehydration and causes an agonizing death.

Currently, the exact departure point of this lethal train is unknown. Federal investigators are attempting to trace the commercial route of the Union Pacific company. It is also unclear at what exact moment the individuals boarded the container. Border police continue to collect multiple pieces of evidence throughout the perimeter area.

How is the official identification process progressing?

The identity of 4 deceased individuals remains an absolute mystery. Forensic doctors took multiple DNA samples to search for matches. This delicate process is carried out in conjunction with several international consulates. The U.S. CBP’s Missing Migrants Program also actively participates.

This government program seeks to identify all human remains found annually. Humanitarian organizations estimate that over 1,500 unidentified bodies currently await in various morgues along the border. It is a painful, constant, and very complex humanitarian crisis to resolve.

Meanwhile, Mexican authorities promised to provide strong legal support. The main objective is to finalize the eventual repatriation of the recovered remains. Honduran families also await urgent news about their missing loved ones. The police investigation will remain fully open until these painful events are clarified.
