The Donald Trump federal government and the state of New Jersey reached a crucial agreement this Sunday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) authorized the immediate resumption of family visits at the Delaney Hall detention center. Community visits had remained suspended due to violent unrest recorded in the surrounding area.

The crisis at the Newark facility erupted following intense nights of protests. Activists and relatives of detainees clashed repeatedly with federal law enforcement. The suspension of access for relatives had heightened discontent and anguish within the local Hispanic community.

The detention center currently houses approximately 300 immigrants in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). A group of detainees initiated a hunger strike to protest inhumane living conditions. This voluntary fast quickly turned the building into the epicenter of opposition to the White House’s immigration policy.

How Will the New Visitation Schedule Operate at Delaney Hall?

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill detailed the opening schedule through an official message on her social media. Limited visits began operating this same Sunday starting at noon. Regular hours of public service will be fully restored starting Monday in a coordinated manner.

Sherrill urged affected families to contact the facility’s administration directly to learn about specific restrictions. Additionally, the governor confirmed that state police will monitor the perimeter access points of the facility. Law enforcement officers will help escort relatives to ensure safe entry into the industrial building.

The state official emphasized that it is critical for outside actors to avoid provoking altercations during these transfers. The success of the community measure will depend on maintaining peace in the exclusion zone. The reopening represents a political victory for state management against the original directives of federal agencies.

What Demands Does New Jersey Maintain Against the Federal Government?

Despite achieving the reopening of visits, Governor Sherrill maintains a firm stance of demands toward the DHS. The regional leader demands adequate medical care and urgent supply of medications for the entire detained population. She also demands that each detainee be given a fair and meaningful opportunity to review their legal files.

The state official requested a halt to alleged institutional pressures to force migrants to sign voluntary deportation documents. Sherrill demanded complete transparency regarding the identities and status of those detained at the facility. Her administration’s ultimate goal remains the permanent closure of Delaney Hall.

For its part, Saturday night saw ideological confrontations between various civil groups outside the facility. The day pitted protesters opposed to Donald Trump’s policies against groups supporting ICE’s work. The presence of multiple factions radicalized the messaging and increased the danger of direct civil confrontation.

What Are the Curfew Rules in Newark?

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka issued a mandatory curfew throughout the city in response to the unrest. The emergency measure establishes an exclusion perimeter of half a mile around Delaney Hall. The prohibition on civilian circulation will remain in effect every night from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

The main avenue where the migrant center operates remains completely closed to pedestrian and protester traffic. Vehicle access in the restricted area was strictly limited to drivers who can verify official business. The city aims to dissolve the nighttime protest hotspots that were affecting the safety of local residents.

On one hand, Mayor Baraka warned that people who violate the mandatory ordinance will be subject to severe enforcement measures. In this regard, patrols will initially issue a verbal warning for citizens to leave the conflict zone. However, continued noncompliance will result in forced expulsion, the issuance of court citations, and ultimately arrests on serious criminal charges.

What Police Containment Measures Are Being Applied in the Area?

The security deployment in Newark increased substantially after several protesters were detained over the weekend. Governor Sherrill ordered the deployment of state police contingents to relieve ICE units. State officers proceeded to install containment fences and concrete blocks at intersections.
