Tension is growing in New Jersey following several days of protests and complaints at the Delaney Hall immigrant detention center. Dozens of detained individuals are maintaining a hunger and work strike now in its fifth day, while demonstrations intensify outside the facility.

The conflict escalated over the weekend when clashes erupted between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and protesters. The confrontations included the use of pepper spray and deployment of riot control units.

The protests are occurring amid complaints about unsanitary conditions inside the detention center. Family members, activists, and lawmakers assert that the situation reflects a structural problem in the immigration detention system in the United States.

What Sparked the Strike at Delaney Hall?

The strike began last Friday following months of complaints from detained individuals. Major grievances include lack of hygiene, food shortages, and deficiencies in medical care.

Detainees are demanding intervention from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill. The official arrived Monday with a Democratic delegation from Congress, but was denied access to the facility.

Sherrill questioned this decision and warned that it raises doubts about the center’s management. “It raises serious questions about what they are trying to hide from the public,” she declared following her failed visit.

What Happened During the ICE Confrontations?

Monday witnessed one of the most critical moments. Protesters formed a human chain in front of the center to prevent the transfer of detainees, which resulted in new clashes with federal agents.

Senator Andy Kim, who managed to enter the facility, described a chaotic scene. He stated that ICE‘s response worsened the situation instead of promoting dialogue.

According to his testimony, agents deployed armored vehicles and used pepper spray against the crowd. He also reported that civilians were knocked down and subdued during the intervention.

What Are Politicians and Activists Denouncing?

The crisis has sparked intense political debate. Democratic legislators from New Jersey have spoken out against conditions at Delaney Hall and the actions of federal authorities.

Senator Cory Booker stated that detainees are protesting for their human rights. Additionally, he described conditions inside the detention center as “deplorable.”

In contrast, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin denied the strike exists. He claimed it is a political maneuver driven by local leaders linked to “sanctuary city” policies.

What Conditions Have Been Reported Inside the Center?

Complaints about conditions inside the center are serious and ongoing. Activists assert that detainees earn one dollar per hour for basic work, such as cleaning, which they consider insufficient.

The presence of mold in facilities and lack of adequate hygiene products have also been reported. According to testimonies, detainees must use the same soap for bathing and cleaning.

Family members and organizations have warned of medical negligence cases. One example cited is that of a detainee with leukemia who reportedly waited a month to receive treatment.
