Detention centers operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are recording an alarming increase in self-harm and suicides. Official data and emergency records paint a deeply troubling and painful picture. In just the past year, over one thousand 911 calls were made from various detention centers. At least 28 of these calls were directly related to serious self-harm incidents. There were cases of individuals swallowing dangerous objects or ingesting industrial cleaning chemicals.

He asserted that violent incidents would decrease significantly if people had a clear release date. Knowing when their confinement will end would alleviate much of their daily deep mental desperation.
Lack of information drastically worsens the existing documented mental health problems. Emergency calls reveal that many inmates experience episodes of acute psychosis and altered mental states. Some detainees refuse to eat for days or take their prescribed psychiatric medications. Punitive isolation typically worsens these fragile psychological conditions rather than resolving them.
