The mental and physical health of immigrants in the United States faces an unprecedented crisis. Detention centers operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are recording an alarming increase in self-harm and suicides. This phenomenon is occurring under the strict immigration policies of President Donald Trump‘s administration.

Official data and emergency records paint a deeply troubling and painful picture. In just the past year, over one thousand 911 calls were made from various detention centers. At least 28 of these calls were directly related to serious self-harm incidents. There were cases of individuals swallowing dangerous objects or ingesting industrial cleaning chemicals.

The psychological pressure on detainees appears to be reaching an absolute breaking point. So far this year, five tragic suicide deaths have been recorded in these federal facilities. This figure represents the highest level documented in the past two decades. All of this is occurring before the year is even halfway through.

Why Have Self-Harm Cases Increased So Much?

The increase in these incidents coincides directly with the tightening of current immigration policies. The Trump administration seeks to deport as many undocumented immigrants as possible quickly. ICE is detaining individuals for much longer periods and often without any possibility of release. This constant uncertainty deeply affects the emotional stability of thousands of people.

Epidemiologist Sanjay Basu conducted detailed research into the various deaths that have recently occurred in ICE custody. He noted that the sharp increase in self-harm indicates a serious underlying mental health problem. He explained that many of these tragic deaths would be highly preventable with proper regular monitoring. Early assessments to detect suicidal tendencies are fundamental to saving human lives.

Currently, ICE is holding nearly 60,000 people in its multiple facilities nationwide. This figure nearly doubles the 34,000 detainees that existed during the previous Biden administration. Additionally, the average detention time has increased from 36 to 50 days. Overcrowding exacerbates the already difficult living conditions in these massive facilities.

What Do Attorneys Say About the Emotional State of Detainees?

Immigrant rights advocates warn about the terrible consequences of these detentions. Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, an experienced immigration attorney, pointed to a highly destructive psychological factor today. He explained that the problem is not just the appalling physical conditions inside the cold cells. The worst torture is the constant feeling of not knowing whether they will ever get out.

Sandoval-Moshenberg asserted that complex immigration procedures drag on endlessly without any clear justification. This bureaucratic slowness causes detainees to increasingly lose hope of freedom. He asserted that violent incidents would decrease significantly if people had a clear release date. Knowing when their confinement will end would alleviate much of their daily deep mental desperation.

Lack of information drastically worsens the existing documented mental health problems. Emergency calls reveal that many inmates experience episodes of acute psychosis and altered mental states. Some detainees refuse to eat for days or take their prescribed psychiatric medications. Punitive isolation typically worsens these fragile psychological conditions rather than resolving them.

How Are Government Authorities Responding to These Allegations?

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) flatly rejected any suggestion of an increase in deaths. An official spokesman asserted that current mortality rates represent only a tiny percentage of the population. He assured that ICE maintains a level of medical care superior to that of most local prisons. He characterized the medical services provided as the best care that many have ever received.
