President Donald Trump accused Democrats of cheating in California. The president claimed that slow results in the gubernatorial and mayoral primaries seek to hide electoral fraud. However, he presented no evidence for this serious allegation on social media.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that there is great deception by Democrats in California. He asserted that votes are tied up and that it could take weeks to receive them. He also mentioned a supposed investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s office responded quickly to the president’s accusations. On his official account, Newsom’s team said Trump is lying about California again. They also told him to put down the phone and rest, referring to his advanced age.
Why Does Trump Accuse California of Electoral Fraud?
Trump accused Democrats of attempting to steal the gubernatorial primary in the Golden State. He also said they want to remove the Los Angeles mayoral primary from two major Republican candidates. He criticized the large numbers of mail-in votes arriving late, according to his post on Truth Social.
In the gubernatorial race, Republican Steve Hilton leads with 27.6% of votes. Democrat Xavier Becerra has 25.6% according to the Associated Press. However, less than two-thirds of votes have been counted. The result could change with pending mail-in votes.
In the Los Angeles mayoral race, Mayor Karen Bass has 35% of votes. Television host Spencer Pratt, a registered Republican, has 29.9%. Progressive council member Nithya Raman has 22.8%. A clear winner in this tight race has not yet been announced.
Prediction markets on Polymarket show that the majority are betting on Democratic results. 99% of bettors believe Becerra will advance to the second round. For the mayor’s race, 70% are betting on Bass and Raman in the runoff.
Why Does California Take Weeks to Count Votes?
California is one of the slowest states to report electoral results. The state prioritizes voter participation and vote verification over speed in counting. Nearly 90% of votes were cast by mail.
