The redesign of the electoral map in Florida, strongly pushed by the Republican Party, has generated political conflict. This time the controversy is not just partisan, but has sparked an enormous internal war among the Democratic Party’s own members. Various progressive leaders strongly condemned renowned congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for her recent and controversial campaign decision.
The vast majority of influential members of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in Florida openly and harshly criticized Wasserman Schultz. Through a public letter, the leaders rejected her intention to run for District 20. This important southern district had historically been designed to solidly guarantee fair political representation for the entire African American population.
The congresswoman, who curiously chaired the important DNC committee between 2011 and 2016, announced her criticized candidacy last week. African American Democrats feel strongly that their scarce spaces of power and legislative representation are being unjustly taken away.
The letter also alerts voters by asserting that “African American representation throughout the South is under coordinated attack.” Progressive leaders bluntly indicated that it is completely unacceptable to denounce Republican gerrymandering while committing opportunistic actions. “Our party cannot credibly denounce the political dismantling (…) while treating one of the few majority African American districts as a political opportunity,” they argued.
Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz, who is white and Jewish, traditionally represented the populous District 25 of Florida. However, the Republican legislative strategy completely dismantled her former electoral zone, dividing her voters into five different districts. Faced with this adverse scenario, she decided to shift her electoral base to District 20, currently considered the safest seat for Democrats in the region.
Why did the governor change the districts?
The controversial map pushed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis strategically redesigns multiple key Democratic districts nationally. This aggressive political plan seeks to make them overwhelmingly more favorable for Republican candidates during the upcoming Florida elections. The media outlet Politico reported that an official memorandum tacitly admitted that the map eliminated
