Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace opened a new political front in the United States. The South Carolina gubernatorial hopeful is pushing a constitutional amendment that would prevent naturalized citizens from holding key positions in the federal government.

The proposal directly targets Congress, the federal judiciary, and positions requiring Senate confirmation. The proposal raises tensions in a year marked by debates over immigration, national loyalty, and the future of the Republican Party.

Mace presented the initiative as a measure to strengthen loyalty to the country. However, her proposal is already generating significant controversy, as it seeks to limit political rights of citizens who today have full legal recognition in the United States.

What Exactly Does Nancy Mace Propose?

The legislator contends that only U.S. citizens by birth should be able to legislate, judge, or assume certain high-level offices. In her view, this criterion should be expanded beyond the presidency and vice presidency.

Currently, the Constitution requires natural-born citizenship only to aspire to the White House. Mace wants to extend that same standard to members of Congress, federal judges, and officials who need Senate approval.

The Republican voiced her position with harsh language. She expressed dismay at seeing people born outside the country occupy congressional seats and judicial positions, accusing them of prioritizing interests contrary to those of the United States.

What Is the Political Argument Behind the Amendment?

Nancy Mace insists that her initiative seeks to ensure singular national loyalty. According to her rhetoric, those who draft laws, confirm judges, or represent the country should have no political, emotional, or symbolic ties to another nation.

The congresswoman asserts that for too long, people born abroad were allowed to reach positions of influence. In her view, that weakened the “America First” idea, a slogan closely associated with Trumpism.

It is no accident that Mace presents herself as “Trump with heels.” With that image, she aims to connect with hard-core conservative voters who demand more radical measures on immigration, national identity, and control of federal institutions.

Who Is the Republican Representative Targeting?

To justify her initiative, Mace specifically cited three Democratic congressmembers born outside the United States. She mentioned Ilhan Omar, Shri Thanedar, and Pramila Jayapal, whom she accuses of failing to demonstrate full loyalty to the country.

That targeting transforms the proposal into more than a constitutional debate. It also turns it into a direct political offensive against Democratic legislators with immigrant roots, at a time of high polarization in Washington.

The South Carolina representative contends that those cases reflect a broader problem. According to her reading, some naturalized officials use their power to advocate agendas that do not align with U.S. national interests.

What Impact Would the Proposal Have if It Advanced?

The amendment would have a profound effect on federal political structure. Currently, 26 members of Congress are naturalized U.S. citizens, of which 19 are Democrats and 7 are Republicans.

This means the measure would not only affect the opposition. It would also reach members
