Less than 1 month before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Lionel Messi received another tribute in the United States. This time, the recognition came from Berkeley Heights, a municipality in Union County, New Jersey. There, a street was temporarily and symbolically renamed “Leo Messi Way.”
The gesture did not go unnoticed because it comes at a moment of high sports and media expectation. The 2026 World Cup will make the United States one of the great centers of global soccer. Additionally, New Jersey will play a central role because MetLife Stadium will host the tournament final on July 19th.
The decision also reflects the cultural weight that Messi has gained since his arrival at MLS with Inter Miami. His figure no longer limits itself to the playing field. Today he represents a tourist, commercial, and emotional magnet for thousands of Latino fans and a large part of the general public in the United States.
Why Did Berkeley Heights Decide to Honor Messi?
Berkeley Heights is located about 40 kilometers from MetLife Stadium, home to 8 World Cup matches. That proximity explains part of the symbolism. The municipality is preparing for the most important sporting event on the planet and decided to join in with a tribute to one of its most influential figures.
