The financial policy of the United States has taken a drastic turn with direct implications for international monetary flow. President Donald Trump signed an executive order called “Restoring Integrity to the Financial System of the United States.” This decree requires banking institutions to closely monitor transfers of funds to foreign countries. Additionally, the regulation requires banks to identify the legal status of users in U.S. territory. The explicit objective of the White House is to combat illicit operations directly linked to organized crime.

However, various economic analysts warn that the measure will primarily affect the sending of remittances to families. Although the government text avoids using the word “remittances,” the oversight focuses on capital issued by foreign residents. The controls will pay special attention to citizens who operate with the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Likewise, financial institutions will scrutinize frequent deposits or withdrawals made in small amounts. This administrative strategy has raised global alerts due to its impact on the most vulnerable communities.

The new banking oversight represents a structural change in the responsibilities of bank tellers and financial executives in the country. The federal government transfers part of its immigration control tasks to employees of the private banking sector. Therefore, banking users could face requests for additional documentation if they cannot prove permanent resident status. This administrative pressure seeks to force a scenario of voluntary exit for workers who lack official papers. The effects of this regulation will be strongly felt both in the local environment and in receiving nations.

The repercussions of this executive order threaten the financial stability of border municipalities in Latin America. According to reports distributed by the news network CNN en Español, remittances constitute the main sustenance for millions of low-income households. Mexico positions itself as the second recipient of these monetary flows worldwide, surpassed only by India. Restrictions on sending money will directly affect the purchasing capacity for basic consumer goods in the region.

To understand the magnitude of the phenomenon, it is worthwhile to review official data provided by banks and central banks. During the 2025 period, the Bank of Mexico registered the receipt of 61,791 million dollars for this concept. Researcher Patricia Pozos Rivera, belonging to the Institute of Economic Research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, analyzed these essential figures. The expert points out that this total amount represents almost 3% of Mexico’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This amount of money exceeds by 10 times the total budget that the Mexican State allocates to public education.

Economic Indicator of Remittances (2025) Recorded Value Macroeconomic Equivalence
Total annual flow to Mexico 61,791 million dollars Almost 3% of Mexican GDP
Average amount per transaction 408 dollars Direct family sustenance salary
Total volume of transfers from USA 13.1 million transactions Operational burden for banking

For the international community, these resources simply represent wages earned through the physical effort of the working class. Restricting the free circulation of these legitimate salaries directly punishes the well-being of the migrant labor force. Hence, the measure is considered by various academics as an economic extension of traditional geopolitical borders.
