The political arena in New York is preparing for the midterm elections scheduled for June 23. The primary elections will determine which candidates will compete in the general elections in November. Darializa Ávila, a community leader of Dominican origin, has just secured key backing in her bid to reach Congress.
The Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, joined the social democratic candidate. Ávila is seeking to unseat Congressman Adriano Espaillat from the seat representing District 13 of Upper Manhattan. Espaillat has held that position since 2017 and faces an internal challenge.
The mayor announced this on Thursday in an interview with El Diario. Mamdani revealed that he supports Ávila because he shares the conviction that New Yorkers deserve better. Ávila was part of his campaign for mayor in northern Manhattan and the west Bronx.
Why does Mayor Mamdani support Darializa Ávila?
The mayor added that at a time when ICE and the federal administration are targeting the immigrant and Latino community, it is urgent to bring to Washington an advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable. Mamdani emphasized that Ávila not only believes in these things, but has fought to achieve them.
