Disney has released the first preview of the sixth installment of the Ice Age saga. The new film will be titled “Ice Age: Boiling Point” and arrives a decade after Collision Course. This trailer served to confirm that the protagonists will reunite in this new animated adventure. Now they must face active volcanoes that threaten their home in the prehistoric world.
“Ice Age: Boiling Point” will be the first of six films coming from Disney. The Walt Disney Company purchased part of 21st Century Fox’s assets in 2019. Fox produced the first five films of the globally successful animated franchise. In this historic transaction, Disney acquired the rights to Avatar, The Simpsons, X-Men, and Ice Age.
Despite the closure of Blue Sky Studios during the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney will be able to continue telling the story. The main characters include Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Buck, and the iconic Scrat searching for his acorn. The English voices will be performed by the same actors who have done so since the first film. The original saga debut took place in 2002 with massive success.
Who Are the Protagonists?
The direction of “Ice Age: Boiling Point” was handled by John C. Donkin, a historic producer of the franchise. He made his directorial debut in 2022 with the spin-off “The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild”. That film focused on the story of Buck, Crash, and Eddy preventing invasion by dinosaurs.
Manny is the protective mammoth leader of his family and group of prehistoric friends. Sid is the odd-toothed sloth who always seeks companionship and fun adventures. Diego is the saber-toothed tiger who learned to be a friend of the mammoths.
Ellie is the female mammoth who becomes Manny’s partner in later installments. Buck is the daring weasel who discovers the underground world of prehistoric dinosaurs. Scrat is the prehistoric rodent obsessed with constantly finding his perfect acorn.
Why Is Disney Producing the Film Now?
Walt Disney Company acquired the rights to Ice Age in the 21st Century Fox transaction of 2019. Fox and Blue Sky Studios originally produced the first five films of the animated saga. Disney decided to close Blue Sky Studios during the COVID-19 pandemic for strategic reasons.
Blue Sky Studios was the company that produced the “Ice Age” animated films since 2002. Despite the company’s closure, Disney maintains complete rights to the successful franchise. The company can continue the story of characters that now have 24 years of existence.
This animated film will be distributed globally in traditional theaters. The release is scheduled for February 5 of next year, 2027. This return to theaters marks a shift from the 2022 spin-off that was exclusive to Disney+.
