A tragic mass shooting struck the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday. The largest mosque in the county of the same name in California, leaving at least five people dead. The incident began around 12:00 local time, when authorities deployed a strong tactical operation after reports of an “active shooter” at the facility located in the Clairemont neighborhood. Among the fatalities are three adults, including a security guard who helped contain the assault, and the two suspected attackers. According to initial FBI investigations, the shooters were teenagers between 17 and 19 years old. They reportedly took their own lives with self-inflicted gunshot wounds; their bodies were found inside a vehicle near the scene.
In recent hours, security agencies’ positions are clear and on maximum alert. In this regard, local police chief Scott Wahl reported that competent authorities are formally analyzing the incident from the perspective of a hate crime. For now, the FBI and local forces have cordoned off the area while examining the scene and the suspects’ vehicle. At the same time, the latest reports show heartbreaking images of the evacuation, where agents escorted children by the hand away from the temple. For their part, community representatives and civil rights advocates have expressed their deep distress, also noting that this attack occurs amid a concerning and recent increase in violence against the Muslim community and its places of worship throughout the United States.
