Trump Has a Letter Ready for JD Vance in Case of His Death

White House counterterrorism adviser Sebastian Gorka revealed that President Trump has left written instructions for Vice President JD Vance in a letter kept in the Resolute Desk, to be used in case of Trump's death or incapacity. The revelation comes amid heightened security concerns following three assassination attempts on Trump in less than two years.

Planning regarding presidential succession has regained momentum in Washington due to recent revelations from the White House. This week, counterterrorism adviser Sebastian Gorka confirmed that President Donald Trump has left written instructions for his Vice President, JD Vance. This will be relevant in the event that a tragedy or assassination occurs that prevents him from continuing in office.

The existence of this document was revealed by the official on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, during an interview on the Pod Force One podcast. “There is a letter in the drawer of the Resolute Desk that is addressed to the Vice President in case something happens to him,” Gorka stated when asked about security measures surrounding the U.S. president. Although the adviser did not detail the exact contents of the text, he did confirm that the government has strict emergency protocols in place.

News of the letter emerges at a time of high international tension and concern for presidential security. The revelation coincided directly with Trump’s official trip to Beijing to hold a 2-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. For this event, Asian authorities had to fortify the capital with police patrols and closures of public spaces, including the historic Temple of Heaven.

Why Is There So Much Concern About His Security?

The level of alert regarding President Trump’s physical safety, who will turn 80 next month, is not solely due to international diplomatic tensions. The president has survived 3 public assassination attempts in less than 2 years. The most recent case occurred in April 2026 in Washington D.C. This demonstrates that threats to his life continue to be a constant risk factor.

That latest incident occurred outside the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Authorities managed to arrest and neutralize a 31-year-old male, identified as Cole Thomas Allen. This individual traveled armed with a shotgun, a pistol, and several knives with the intention of attacking the president during the event itself. Currently, the suspect faces federal charges for attempted murder and is detained without bail eligibility.

Despite recent incidents, adviser Sebastian Gorka attempted to calm speculation about possible risks abroad during the president’s diplomatic tour of Asia. When asked if there was fear for Trump’s safety in China, Gorka responded: “Not at all. I have no fear that they would do anything,” adding that, according to his official assessment, the president is in a “very safe” environment.

What Would Happen If the President Could Not Continue?

The debate over presidential succession is a recurring topic in U.S. politics. The Twenty-Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution clearly establishes the line of command in the event that
