A new poll published on Saturday suggests that the race for California’s governorship remains highly competitive. Democrat Tom Steyer has narrowly edged out Republican Steve Hilton in the battle for second place. The primary election is just around the corner as voters begin to define their preferences.

The Emerson College poll revealed that former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra leads the race with 28% of support. Steyer follows with 22%, while Hilton sits close behind with 21%. These numbers show a tight contest to secure a spot in November’s general election.

The results differ slightly from the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (Berkeley IGS) poll released on Friday. That survey showed Becerra leading with 25%, Hilton in second place with 21%, and Steyer with 19%. Although the polls differ on who holds second place, both agree on who the frontrunners are.

What Does California’s “Top-Two” Primary System Mean?

Under California’s “Top-Two” primary system, the two candidates who receive the most votes advance to the November general election, regardless of their party affiliation. This means we could see two Democrats facing off, or a traditional matchup between a Democrat and a Republican.
