Democrats Accuse Trump of Attempting to Influence Colombia’s Elections

Democratic congressmen rejected U.S. efforts to influence Colombia's elections, with 20 House members led by Jim McGovern calling for respect of the South American nation's sovereignty ahead of the June 21 runoff. The statement comes after Trump publicly endorsed candidate Abelardo De la Espriella and criticized official candidate Iván Cepeda as representing the "radical left."

A group of Democratic congressmen rejected on Friday the efforts of the U.S. Government to “directly influence the electoral results of Colombia.” The lawmakers called for respecting the sovereignty of the South American country before the runoff on June 21.

In a statement signed by 20 members of the House of Representatives, led by Representative Jim McGovern, they expressed their rejection. The lawmakers oppose the Trump Administration’s attempts to influence the election.

“We believe that Trump’s actions and other members of Congress to support, promote, or tip the scales in favor of a particular candidate are harmful to democratic rights,” the congressmen stated. The message was published by EFE.

What Did Trump Say About Colombia’s Elections?

The representatives’ rejection came a week after Trump expressed on his social media direct support for Abelardo De la Espriella’s candidacy. The U.S. president did so following his victory in the first round of voting.

In that same message, Trump described the official candidate Iván Cepeda as a representative of the “radical left.” This term is frequently used by Trump to describe progressive Latin American politicians. “He stated that a potential victory by De la Espriella would favor economic growth, security, and cooperation between both countries,” according to EFE. That statement was interpreted as interference in the Colombian electoral process.

The intervention provoked criticism from the Colombian Government and sectors that considered it electoral interference. President Gustavo Petro rejected Trump’s position. The diplomatic tension increased between Washington and Bogotá. The congressmen described this action as “an insult to their sovereignty and integrity, and totally incompatible with U.S. principles of non-interference.” That phrase summarizes the official position of the Democratic group.

The principle of non-interference is fundamental in traditional U.S. foreign policy. Democrats argue that Trump violated that principle. The controversy generated intense debates in Congress. The campaign toward the second round has been marked by strong polarization between both Colombian aspirants. Increasing international interest in the election results defined the tone of the dispute.

Who Is Iván Cepeda and What Does He Represent?

Iván Cepeda is the candidate of the ruling Historical Pact and a representative of the continuity of President Gustavo Petro’s political project. The candidate defends the political direction initiated by Petro in 2022. Cepeda advanced to the runoff after obtaining 40.9% of the votes in the first round of voting. The candidate reached the second round as a representative of Colombia’s progressive left.

The presidential first round on May 31 showed an election marked by strong polarization.
