The horror film Backrooms emerged as the top-grossing film of the weekend after earning $118 million at theaters worldwide, of which $81.4 million came from North America and Canada, according to data from Box Office Mojo.

The film is directed by Kane Parsons, a novice 20-year-old director who began developing the idea in a series for his YouTube channel. With a budget of just $10 million, this success makes it one of the most profitable horror films in cinema history.

It represents the largest debut in the history of an original horror film and the best debut for a novice filmmaker of a project not belonging to a franchise. Parsons thus becomes the youngest director to have a number-one box office film, according to Variety.

Kane Parsons is a 20-year-old director who began developing the idea for Backrooms in a series of shorts for his YouTube channel. The first episode of that series premiered in 2022 and surpassed 80 million views, according to data cited by EFE.
