The United States launched a series of attacks against Iran on Tuesday in retaliation for the downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident began on Monday. Indeed, the aircraft was attacked and crashed near the coast of Oman, in an area of high military tension.
Two soldiers aboard were rescued alive by U.S. forces. From Washington, U.S. Central Command confirmed that the response began at 5:00 p.m. local time. That is, it began at 9:00 p.m. GMT, under the argument of a self-defense action.
How Did the Events Unfold?
President Donald Trump had already warned on Tuesday that there would be retaliation for the Iranian offensive. In his public message, he maintained that the United States must necessarily respond to the attack. Central Command explained that the mission corresponds to a proportional response to an aggression it described as unjustified.
However, it did not detail which targets were struck or the exact scope of the operation. This offensive involved the Trump administration and Central Command. Additionally, Iranian forces are involved, amid an escalation that is again shaking the Gulf region.
In the latest hours, tensions escalated because these attacks occurred while Iran and Israel continued exchanging fire at various points in the region. Trump also demanded on Monday an immediate end to the shooting, even from his Israeli ally.
Additionally, the president said early Tuesday that he could still reach an agreement with Iran in 2 or 3 days. Although that timeline has been mentioned before amid several rounds of negotiations. For now, the situation remains open and the White House insists that the response seeks to prevent further aggression. They also want to contain a crisis that threatens to expand.
