The Fast & Furious franchise shows no signs of exhaustion. On the contrary, it’s accelerating toward a new format. After 25 years dominating the worldwide box office with its automotive action films, the universe of Dominic Toretto will make a definitive leap to television.
Actor and producer Vin Diesel was tasked with revealing the news during an NBCUniversal corporate presentation this Monday. Before executives and the press, he confirmed that Peacock, Universal’s streaming service, will launch four series set within the popular motorized universe. The decision marks the largest narrative expansion effort since the film saga’s creation in 2001.
The idea to make the jump to episodic format did not happen overnight. According to Diesel himself, it has been a constant request from followers. “Over the past decade, we have realized that fans wanted more,” the actor said. The primary objective of these new projects will be to provide greater space for narrative arcs that don’t always fit in a two-hour film.
Why Did They Decide to Bet on Television?
One of the greatest challenges of Fast & Furious in cinema has been balancing the enormous number of characters that have joined the “family” over the years. Television will offer a direct solution to this problem. According to Vin Diesel, fans “wanted us to expand the legacy characters and their stories.” The depth that a series allows is the primary reason behind this ambitious expansion.
