A Hispanic family of four with low to moderate income could receive over $20,000 per year in federal benefits in 2026. This assistance includes food, health, energy, and tax credits. However, millions of eligible households never apply for these programs.

Not enrolling in SNAP means missing out on up to $994 monthly in food assistance. Not qualifying for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) can result in thousands of dollars less when filing taxes. That is, up to $8,046 can be left on the table due to lack of knowledge.

Each federal program has an open door and a clear process. The problem is that many households don’t know these programs exist. This lack of knowledge leaves benefits unclaimed and increases monthly expenses without justification.

What Federal Programs Can Save Money for Families?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known as “food stamps,” provides up to $994 monthly to a family of four. The average benefit is approximately $188 per person per month. For a family with two adults and two children, assistance can reach more than $750 monthly or about $9,000 annually.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a fully refundable tax benefit. If the credit exceeds what you owe in taxes, the government returns the difference in cash. For the 2025 tax year, the maximum amount is $8,046 for families with three or more children, according to the IRS.

CHIP and Medicaid offer free or low-cost health insurance for children. Nearly 75 million people are enrolled in these programs across the country. This data was published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in May 2026. Children born in the United States qualify regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps cover heating costs and, in some states, also cooling expenses. The amount varies by state. In New York, the program is known as HEAP and operates between December 1, 2025, and late June 2026.

The Child Tax Credit provides up to $2,200 for each child under 17 for the 2025 tax year. A family with three eligible children can receive up to $6,600 in refunds for this benefit alone. To claim it, you must file your tax return with Form 1040 and Schedule 8812.

How to Apply for These Benefits Without Errors?

  • To apply for SNAP, you need to contact your state office or go to usa.gov in Spanish. The process can be done online.
