A shooting in Kansas City, United States, left at least nine people wounded and triggered alerts due to its proximity to the operations base of the England national team. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday and was reported by local media, though it gained international relevance due to the sports context.

The incident took place around 4:00 a.m. on Troost Avenue, an urban area in this city in the state of Missouri. According to Kansas City Police, officers responded after receiving reports of gunfire and found a crowd fleeing the scene.

At the scene, officers initially found three women with gunshot wounds. Subsequently, it was confirmed that six other people were also injured, bringing the total to nine victims in this episode of armed violence.

What is Known About the Kansas City Shooting?

Authorities reported that all victims are adults and that, despite the severity of the attack, none have injuries that pose a life-threatening risk. This information has been key in reducing initial alarm, though it does not diminish concerns about the frequency of such incidents.

Police Department spokesperson Alayna González noted that the area was cordoned off while initial investigations were conducted. To date, the number of attackers and the exact circumstances of the shooting have not been confirmed.

The motive for the crime has also not been determined. Police continue gathering evidence and testimonies to clarify what happened, in a case that remains open with no confirmed arrests.

Why Did the Case Have International Impact?

The incident drew attention outside the United States due to its proximity to England’s team base. The team is scheduled to use facilities in Kansas City during the group stage of an upcoming international competition.

The shooting occurred approximately six kilometers from the hotel and training center assigned to the England team. This proximity generated coverage in British media, which highlighted security risks in the area.

However, at the time of the incident, the national team was not in the city. The team was in Florida, where it was playing friendly matches as preparation for its international participation.

Where Was England’s National Team?

The England squad is currently on a tour of the United States. On Saturday, the day of the shooting, it achieved a 1-0 victory against New Zealand at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

The team has another friendly match scheduled against Costa Rica, which will be played in Orlando. These matches are part of their preparation before the international tournament in which they will participate.

The geographic distance between the team and the shooting location prevented any direct risk to players and coaching staff. Nevertheless, the incident reignited concerns about safety at venues linked to sports.

What Do the Numbers Say About Armed Violence in the U.S.?

The shooting in Kansas City adds to a long list of similar episodes recorded so far this year. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive organization, the United States has recorded at least 170 mass shootings in 2026.
