California Governor Gavin Newsom recently issued an official declaration of local emergency. This radical government safety measure responds to a severe and dangerous toxic chemical leak in Southern California. An unstable industrial storage tank threatens to cause a massive explosion at a commercial facility.
The emergency declaration was issued specifically for the populous Orange County, an immediate neighbor of Los Angeles. In this location, specialists and local emergency teams are maintaining a desperate race against time facing the contingency. They urgently seek to stabilize the temperature of a tank loaded with approximately 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA).
This enormous tank belongs directly to the operational facilities of GKN Aerospace, located in the California city of Garden Grove. According to official reports, the commercial tank has been emitting dangerous chemical vapors since the emergency began. MMA is a highly volatile and flammable industrial liquid used primarily in the manufacturing of commercial acrylic plastics.
Why is methyl methacrylate so dangerous?
Technical stabilization of the large tank is extremely difficult for firefighters due to the chemical characteristics of the product. Industrial methyl methacrylate dangerously generates its own internal heat in an uncontrollable and accelerated manner. This chemical instability threatens to cause a massive toxic air leak or, in the worst possible scenario, a catastrophic destructive explosion.

Orange County Fire Department (OCFA) Chief Craig Covey warned the public about the risks. He detailed that the interior temperature of the storage tank had been increasing progressively. However, Covey later clarified that specialists managed to cool it enough to temporarily stop the dangerous air purge of chemicals.
The greatest public health risks from MMA involve possible respiratory exposure to communities. According to area medical experts, short-term exposure can generate several bothersome and incapacitating symptoms. Inhaling large quantities can cause dizziness, severe nausea, irritating cough, and severe irritation to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.
How many residents have been evacuated from the area?
Facing the imminent and serious risk of a deadly and massive explosion, local authorities quickly proceeded with preventive evacuation. Approximately 50,000 residents were forcibly evacuated from their homes in five populous cities near the unstable tank location. This enormous preventive evacuation includes areas belonging to the localities of Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, and West Anaheim.

The emergency declaration issued by Governor Newsom expedites the delivery of several vital local resources. This executive order formally instructs the various state agencies to mobilize additional support.
